Research background

As a new type of green energy, solar energy is abundant, economic and environment-friendly. Therefore, the use of solar energy draws more and more attention, and grows very fast.


Photovoltaic power generation system is generally consists of solar panels, photovoltaic power generation controller, inverter and battery. Among them, the photovoltaic power generation controller is the core component of this system. Grid-connected and Off-grid operation modes are the 2 main research directions. Off-grid means the system is not connected with the main grid, and this mode is mainly used in the area away from the main grid and some special places, such as remote country, islands. Grid-tied mode means system is connected with the main power grid, together provide power. As PV system demands large area and a lot of equipment (big investment), it's a big challenge for engineers to research such kind of systems.


ModelingTech solution

For the research of PV system, ModelingTech provide 2 kinds of solutions:

- hardware in the loop test (HIL), could easily test photovoltaic power generation controller.

- rapid control prototyping (RCP), with this users could verify their control algorithms quickly.


1. HIL platform for PV System


As shown above in the left half, ModelingTech uses multi-core CPU to simulate power grid, and FPGA to simulate photovoltaic system (Power electronics system). CPU and FPGA utilizes high-speed bus to communicate. Also FPGA is connect to external control board through actual AO and DI (voltage current signal, PWM signal). 

 

With ModelingTech solution, it is convenient to build a real-time simulation system, and the system could be easily changed by users. Because the software StarSim HIL  is based on configuration. Users do not need to program the lower level CPU and FPGA hardware.


On the right side of the diagram, it’s the photovoltaic grid controller, which forms a closed-loop control and simulation system. With this system the controller can be easily test in multiple conditions automatically.
 

2. RCP platform for PV system


As shown above, the right side is the RCP controller. RCP controller is a powerful hardware which is consist of CPU, FPGA and Multi-type I/O. With RCP controller, users could verify their own control algorithm very quickly by download the simulation code of control algorithm.

Combined with HIL system, RCP+HIL could be very powerful as shown above. You could download power and power electronics system directly to the Simulator on the left side, also you could download control algorithm directly to the RCP controller on the right side. With these capabilities users could form any system in a very short time.
